In Which I Nearly Burn Down My House

I like to think I'm pretty good at my job.  I know where the random pieces of equipment are hidden away, I usually relate well with patients, and I'm not bad with tough sticks.

I cannot, however, cook.

Now that I'm off the meal plan for the summer, I'm trying to broaden my culinary repertoire beyond dry pasta and frozen dinners.  Tonight's attempt at making brats on the stove produced charred nuggets of meat that resulted in an inadvertent test of my smoke detector's batteries.  At least nobody called 911.

If anybody out there knows some simple, idiot-proof recipes that might expand my palate while keeping me out of the ER, please feel free to share!

Open a bottle of beer and put in a pot. Add 1-2 cups of water and bring to a boil. Slice 1-2 onions, add to pot, add brats to pot. When pot returns to boil, lower the heat and simmer until the onions are cooked. Take the brats and onions out of the pot and into a fry pan with either a little oil or butter and "gently" saute until browned. Eat and enjoy.

A favorite of mine: Get a chicken breast, or even better, some chicken already cut into strips. Put the chicken on medium heat in a frying pan and cook gently until barely cooked on both sides. Remove from heat and set aside. Cut up some onion and red or green bell pepper and set aside. Take a few tortilla rolls (I like tomato basil flavored ones) and line them up. Spread some chicken, peppers, and onions in the center of each roll, then add some of your favorite cheese (I like cheddar) and some sauce (salsa and/or barbeque sauce work here.)

Fold the rolls over into a sort of burrito shape. Brush some olive oil on top and poke a few holes through with a fork to vent the steam. Then put into the oven at 350 degrees and bake for about 15 minutes.

Delicious!

As a note, you can also put some salt/pepper/garlic/cajun spice or whatever you like on the inside of the rolls to add some flavor.
